Als Erweiterung der interpretatorischen Möglichkeiten soll der Homogenität der vier Saxophone auch die Expressivität des Individuums gegenübergestellt werden. Mit dem Projekt «Xylem» entsteht 1998 die erfolgreiche Projektreihe ARTE+. Es entwickelt sich eine langjährige, fruchtbare Zusammenarbeit mit dem Improvisatoren, Saxophonisten und Klangtüftler Urs Leimgruber. Er schreibt verschiedene Kompositionen für das ARTE Quartett, in denen er unterschiedliche Notationsformen mit Konzeptimprovisationen und freien Improvisationen verbindet. Konventionelles Spiel wird mit experimentellen Klängen und Geräuschen durchdrungen. Durch diese Zusammenarbeit, bei der ein Komponist als Interpret mit dem Quartett zusammen auftritt, lässt ARTE neue Klänge in seine Interpretationen einfliessen.
Eine weitere klangliche Dimension eröffnet sich den Zuhörern 2002 im Projekt «e_a.sonata.02» mit den elektronischen Klängen von Günter Müller.

To enhance interpretational possibilities, the ensembles homogeneity is te be oposed to the expressivity of each individual. A step in the direction of free improvisation is therefore the obvious choice. With Xylem the successful project ARTE+ originates in 1998. An enduring and fertile collaboration with the improviser, saxophone player and sound producer Urs Leimgruber develops from this. He designs different compositions for ARTE Quartett by mixing and combining different notation systems with conceptual and free improvisation. Conventional sounds are mixed with experimental sound and noises. This collaboration introduces a completely new range of sounds and stylistic possibilities.
In 2002, through the project «e_a.sonata.02», the co-produced sound of the 5 saxophones was extended by the electronic sounds of Günter Müller.
