ARTE Quartett «UR»
Nach vielen Jahren intensiver Zusammenarbeit mit Musikern wie Terry Riley, Fred Frith, Pierre Favre, Tim Berne, Lucas Niggli oder Rabih Abou-Khalil und vielen Aufführungen eigener Bearbeitungen verschiedenster Stilrichtungen, geht das ARTE Quartett, nach fast zwanzig Jahren seit der Gründung, nochmals einen Schritt weiter.
Als Destillat vieler Erfahrungen vergangener Jahre ist mit „UR“ ein selbst komponiertes und konzipiertes Programm entstanden, welches schon seit vielen Jahren in den Köpfen der vier Saxophonisten brütete und brodelte.
Neben dem Komponieren von Stücken und Entwickeln von Improvisationskonzepten steht in „UR“ die Klangforschung und das Ausloten von Grenzbereichen des Saxophons im Vordergrund. Dabei geht es um die „UR-tümlichkeit“ der Klänge und die Suche nach dem „UR-Klang“.
Mit elektronischen Mitteln, selbstgebauten Instrumenten und der Verwendung der ganzen Saxophonfamilie – Sopranino bis Kontrabass – werden Spielweisen moderner Musik mit dem „UR-sprung“ von Klängen, wie z.B. der Produktion von Obertönen und speziellen Luftgeräuschen, verbunden und verwoben. Inspiriert durch die Arbeit an der CD „Different Worlds“, wo modale Stücke über Kuhreigen und alten Schweizer Volksliedern auf Elemente der Klezmermusik oder Kompositionen des libanesischen Oud Spielers Rabih Abou-Khalil treffen, wird auch in „UR“ Archaisches und Avantgardistisches gegenübergestellt, auseinandergenommen und neu zusammengesetzt.

After many years of intensive collaborations with other musicians such as Terry Riley, Fred Frith, Pierre Favre, Tim Berne, Lucas Niggli oder Rabih Abou-Khalil and many performances of own arrangements of music in different styles, ARTE takes another turn with its program “UR”.
As a result of many experiences, the four musicians composed and realized a new program that has been turning in their heads for quite a while. Along with the compositions and the improvisations goes the research to find new sounds on the instrument, that evoke futuristic and archaic images at the same time. Thus the title “UR”, which reminds of “UR-Klang”, maybe best translated as a very early archaic sound.
Inspired by the work on the CD „Different Worlds“, ARTE juxtaposes archaic material to futuristic music. Electronics, self-built instruments and the use of the whole family of the Saxophones (from Sopranino to Contrabass) lead to a rich sounding evening, a fanciful music is telling a fascinating tale.
